Hazel

Hazel's
Story
Sadly, many of the dogs in our program once had families and knew what it was like to have a home. Increasingly, we are seeing dogs abandoned on the streets simply because they are no longer wanted. For dogs who have never had to fend for themselves, life on the street can be especially dangerous. They often struggle to find food and shelter and can be attacked by territorial dogs. Tragically, many do not survive.
Hazel was rescued from the streets of Amritsar, India, by our wonderful partner, Pawsitive Sanctuary. When she was found, she was cowering beneath cars, terrified and desperately trying to protect herself. Other dogs were attacking her, while people were hitting her with sticks and throwing water at her simply because she was a “Pit Bull.” Locals even threatened to poison her.
No one was feeding Hazel, and she was little more than skin and bones. Her body was covered in painful sores, and she was in very poor overall condition.
Thankfully, the team at Pawsitive Sanctuary took Hazel back to their shelter, where she received blood work, medical care, and—most importantly—food. That first bowl of food may have been the first proper meal she had received in quite some time.
Hazel is anemic and is now on medication. She will also receive treatment for her skin condition while we work on getting her healthy and helping her regain the weight she desperately needs.
There is currently a heartbreaking stigma surrounding Pit Bulls in India, and we are seeing an increasing number of them abandoned as a result. When I saw Hazel and those beautiful eyes, I knew I had to help her. She deserves the chance to heal, feel safe, and eventually find a loving home where she will never have to be afraid again.
For now, Hazel is still decompressing and feeling understandably stressed, so she is being kept separate from the other dogs. But there are already signs that she is beginning to come out of her shell. She is becoming more vocal, and her energy is slowly returning.
Hazel has a long road ahead. She will need time, patience, and gentle socialization as she learns that people can be kind and that she is finally safe. We will take things slowly and let her set the pace.
But seriously… how can you resist that face?
